Planning Department launches technical Bayview zoning map amendments; commission approves initiation

Planning Department staff presented a package of technical zoning-map amendments for parcels in Bayview-Hunters Point and asked the Planning Commission to initiate the rezoning so required public notice and hearings can proceed. Lily Langlois told commissioners the project is technical in nature and aims to correct omissions from the 2008 rezoning (including condo lots and split zones) and to rezone approximately 246 parcels from M1 to residential districts (RH1 or RH2) where non-industrial uses now exist; a city-owned Southeast Community Facility would be rezoned to a public district (P).
Staff said it had met with the Bayview Project Area Committee and property stakeholders and had not yet received opposition. Commissioner Logie moved to initiate the resolution of intent to allow the department to advertise a later public hearing; the motion passed. Staff said it would return on Sept. 24 for an action hearing unless the commission requested a later date.
Commissioners described the amendments as largely legalizing existing uses and easing property owners’ path to conforming zoning; one commissioner asked for a short delay to review maps. The motion to initiate carried by recorded vote.
