Planning staff updates commission: Academy of Art withdraws bid for portion of Flower Mart; enforcement and IMP work will continue

Planning Department staff updated the commission on the status of the Flower Mart and the Academy of Art University (AAU). Scott Sanchez said the AAU "is no longer seeking to purchase the property at 575 Sixth Street, at least a portion of the Flower Mart," citing lack of support from city officials and other developments from the Flower Mart owners. Sanchez said the department will continue enforcement work and follow up on the AAU’s institutional master plan (IMP) submissions; he noted the IMP submitted in mid-November is available on the Planning Department website.
Sanchez told commissioners the department recommends the Flower Mart/AAU item be a recurring update-only item rather than a standing agenda entry and suggested returning with updates on March 13 or March 20. Several tenants, including growers represented by Patrick McCann, thanked staff for efforts to preserve the Flower Mart. Other public commenters urged continued oversight and a fuller hearing if necessary; some asked the department to continue the item on the agenda for more frequent updates.
What’s next: Staff will calendar follow-up updates and indicated an enforcement hearing for an AAU-related conditional use will be scheduled for March 20. The department said it will continue to post the IMP and project materials online and will work with commissioners on any requests for additional hearings or reports.
