Business owners and customers argued that allowing an additional late-night food option would disperse long lines, reduce crowding at a single pizza shop and provide a safer way to get food for people leaving bars.
Captain Jim Dudley (Central Station) described recurring crowd-management needs in the corridor and said officers currently commit significant overtime to respond to late-night incidents. He recommended carefully considering whether to allow multiple late-night food-service outlets in the same block.
Given conflicting testimony and the operational implications for the police department and entertainment district management, the commission voted to continue the item to the Jan. 24, 2008 meeting to allow staff and police to coordinate and return with an inventory of late-night food-service operations and options for management or conditions. The public hearing remained open.
