The San Francisco Board of Appeals voted unanimously on Jan. 14 to reduce a penalty associated with unpermitted plumbing work at 1318 Masonic Avenue to $1,200.
Department of Building Inspection staff explained that separate penalties had been applied for a heater and for gas-line work and suggested consolidation would be appropriate; DBI staff recommended the board exercise discretion to lower the assessed amount. Property representative Balad Sekirski said the unpermitted work was performed by another occupant and that the owner had promptly pulled the required permit and corrected the work after notification.
Commissioners discussed how the base penalty should be calculated given multiple permit entries and the public-safety concerns associated with gas-line installation. After deliberation, the board fixed the penalty at a set amount of $1,200 and directed DBI to process adjustments accordingly. The vote was 5–0.
