Board upholds DPW on Brotherhood Way tree removals; adds three replacement trees

The San Francisco Board of Appeals unanimously upheld the Department of Public Works’ decision to remove multiple trees along Brotherhood Way and required additional replacements on June 13.
Carla Short of DPW explained the bureau had identified 12 trees for removal in the public right‑of‑way because eight were in very poor condition and four had structural forms that could not be corrected by pruning. DPW proposed replacing nine trees with larger 36‑inch‑box specimens to allow room for growth, and the board added three 24‑inch‑box trees at the department’s discretion to reach a total of 12 replacements.
Commissioners voted 5–0 to uphold the department’s determinations and to include the additional replacement trees; species and placement will be determined by DPW. The bureau emphasized that the larger replacement stock is more expensive and often requires crane handling and additional staff, but that the approach gives trees more room to mature.
