Committee backs ordinance to expand military-pay coverage for COVID-19 deployments

The Budget & Finance Committee voted to forward to the full Board of Supervisors an amendment to the annual salary ordinance that would extend city pay supplementation to employees called to active military duty for COVID-19 response.
Supervisor Stephanie introduced the amendment, saying it would ensure city employees called up to support the COVID-19 response receive the difference between their city salary and military pay, plus continued retirement contributions and benefits for leaves greater than 30 days. "My amendment expands who can receive pay to include members of the military who are called into active duty for COVID-19 response," she said.
The Budget Legislative Analyst told the committee the estimated cost per individual called up is about $55,000 and that this funding is typically paid out of existing department budgets; BLA said the number of San Francisco employees who would qualify for the benefit for COVID-19 deployments was unknown. Members noted the likely small number of impacted employees but emphasized the measure's importance to those families.
With no public callers, the committee voted to move Item 4 with a positive recommendation to the full board (roll-call votes recorded in the affirmative). The clerk and sponsor said department payroll and timecards would be used to notify and process the supplementation when applicable.
