Supervisor Haney's office asks committee to consider $300,000 investigator line; committee defers to full board

Courtney McDonald, representing Supervisor Haney's office, asked the Budget & Appropriations Committee to consider adding a $300,000 line item to the Clerk of the Board's proposed budget to fund a competitive process for a special investigator to review internal controls in departments susceptible to fraud.
McDonald said Supervisors Haney, Mar, Ronan and Preston introduced a related motion and that the $300,000 figure reflects an estimate from the Budget and Legislative Analyst (BLA). "Our preference would be to add a line item for $300,000 which is the estimate that the BLA has helped us come up with and what it would cost to conduct an investigation of this scope," McDonald said, and added the Board had not yet voted to move forward on the motion.
Chair Sandra Lee Feurer confirmed the proposal had not been approved by the full Board and suggested the committee consider the request only after the full Board acts. McDonald acknowledged the motion is still in process and said her office was supportive of the controller and city attorney's parallel work on audits and investigations.
The committee did not take a formal vote on adding the $300,000 line item during this meeting; Calvillo said the committee should consider it if and when the full Board votes to move the motion forward.
