Panel forwards one-year extension of Aramark jail food contract, asks about RFP timing

The Budget and Finance Committee on Oct. 2 voted to forward a resolution authorizing a one-year extension and funding increase to the Sheriff's contract with Aramark Correctional Services for jail food services.
Patrick Leung, chief financial officer for the San Francisco Sheriff's Office, said the amendment would exercise the final option year, extending the contract through Oct. 31, 2025, and raising the not-to-exceed amount to approximately $24.8 million. He said the department had stretched the original contract during the pandemic when the jail population declined and is now preparing an RFP; staff said they expect to issue the RFP in the fourth quarter to meet the impending contract deadline.
Nick Menard from the Budget Legislative Analyst Office said the additional year costs about $4.7 million and that the contract is funded by the General Fund; the BLA recommended approval. Chair Connie Chan pressed for timely issuance of the RFP and confirmation that stakeholders would be consulted before issuing the solicitation.
The committee recorded Supervisor Mirna Melgar and Chair Chan voting "Aye" and forwarded the extension to the Board of Supervisors for final action.
