Committee backs city application to accept $5.5 million state grant for LGBTQ history museum

Bridal Chu (MOHCD) said the state has allocated $5.5 million and the department has tentatively budgeted $5 million for construction and $500,000 for initial operations. Chu said the city does not yet have a firm site or operator and plans to issue an RFP for a community‑based organization to operate the museum and manage construction and operations under state rules requiring a 25‑year commitment.
Public comment included multiple leaders from the GLBT Historical Society. Roberto Ordana, the society’s executive director, asked the committee to pass the resolution so critical state funds could support a permanent space for the nation’s first museum of LGBT history, cited the city's prior $12 million allocation for acquisition and renovation, and recognized Senator Scott Wiener and city leaders for securing state and local support. "These funds will help establish the permanent space needed to expand public programming, exhibitions and events," Ordana said on the record.
Arts and cultural leaders from Galleria de la Raza and other community organizations also urged approval, citing the museum’s archival collections and educational role. Supervisor Rafael Mandelmann and Chair Chan expressed support; the committee voted to forward the application to the full Board with a positive recommendation (roll call: Mandelmann — aye; Melgar — aye; Chan — aye).
What’s next: MOHCD will proceed with application submission and later issue a request for proposals to select an operator and site under the state grant terms; the City’s acceptance will be considered by the full Board per the committee’s recommendation.
