Committee backs library bookstore lease; Friends and Foundation retains small Main Library storefront

The Budget and Finance Committee on June 26 voted to send to the full Board a resolution approving a lease of about 387 square feet at the Main Library (100 Larkin Street) to the Friends and Foundation of the San Francisco Public Library.
Director of Real Estate Andrico Penick described the Friends of the Library as a 501(c)(3) that has operated a bookstore in the library lobby since 2002 and contributes more than $1 million annually in supplemental funding. Penick said the initial five-year term will begin upon Board and mayoral approval and noted the rent terms: an initial base annual rent of $15,555 (about $40.20 per square foot) that may abate to $1 annually if the Friends raise more than $90,000 in a fiscal year.
Committee questions and record: Chair Supervisor Connie Chan asked for examples of fundraising activities and requested a letter for the file; John Coonan of the library said he would provide additional documentation. The director said the space would be used primarily as a bookstore and that fundraising activities take place in other contexts.
Action: Chair Chan moved to forward the lease resolution to the full Board with a positive recommendation; the committee recorded three 'ayes' (Vice Chair Rafael Mendelmann, Member Miona Malgar, Chair Connie Chan) and the motion passed. The file will go to the Board for final approval, and the library agreed to provide supplemental information for the record.
