Committee clears contract for foundation of Hiroshi Sugimoto sculpture at Treasure Island park

The Budget and Finance Committee on Feb. 1 voted to forward to the full board a resolution authorizing the San Francisco Arts Commission to enter an agreement with Treasure Island Series 1 LLC for construction of the foundation for a 69-foot sculpture by Hiroshi Sugimoto.
Brian Dahl, representing Supervisor Matt Dorsey, said Treasure Island will include about 8,000 new housing units and enhanced open spaces; the sculpture is one of the first pieces planned as part of the Treasure Island Arts Program. "In coming years, Treasure Island is planned to see approximately 8,000 new housing units and other developments including enhanced open spaces and small businesses," Dahl said. Mary Chow of the Arts Commission described the sculpture as rising to 69 feet and composed of glass-reinforced concrete and stainless steel that will act as a monumental sundial.
Nick Menard of the BLA summarized the contract as a sole-source agreement for the concrete foundation with a not-to-exceed amount of approximately $274,000; he said the Arts Commission solicited informal bids that were higher than the contract amount and recommended approval. There were no public commenters on the item. Chair Chan moved to forward the resolution with a positive recommendation; the committee recorded 3 ayes and the item will move to the full board.
What happens next: The full Board of Supervisors will consider the resolution authorizing the Arts Commission to execute the foundation contract for the Sugimoto sculpture.
