Committee supports $78,000 extension to UCSF HEARTS program at Bessie Carmichael School

The Budget and Finance Committee on Jan. 27 recommended that the Board approve a $78,000 increase in SoMa Community Stabilization Fund support to extend an existing UCSF HEARTS grant that provides trauma‑informed training and counseling at Bessie Carmichael School.
Claudine Del Rosario (MOHCD) said the program supports students, families and staff with telehealth psychotherapy, group co‑leads, and classroom support; MOHCD noted cost savings extended the program through Nov. 2020 and additional funds are required to continue services through June 2021. Community callers including a school‑community partner, SoMa committee members and West Bay Filipino Multi Service Center urged supervisors to approve the extension citing high rates of student homelessness and trauma.
The committee moved the item to the full Board with a positive recommendation (three ayes). MOHCD said it plans a competitive RFP in the coming quarter to identify longer‑term services responsive to the pandemic’s impacts in SoMa.
