Committee continues sheriff electronic‑monitoring rules amid constitutional concerns

Chair Matt Haney said the committee had received significant conversation between the Sheriff’s Office and the public defender’s office about the proposed home detention and electronic monitoring program rules, particularly whether the sheriff may require waivers of constitutional rights that the court has not imposed. To allow those policy and legal issues to be resolved and to hear a standalone resolution on pretrial electronic monitoring, the chair moved and the committee voted to continue the item to the call of the chair.
There was no public comment in the committee meeting. The motion to continue passed on a roll call (three ayes: Vice Chair Asha Safaei; Member Gordon Marr; Chair Matt Haney). The item will return when the chair schedules it for future committee consideration.
