DA’s office to accept USF Law Clinic in-kind support for resentencing reviews

The Budget and Finance Committee forwarded a resolution authorizing the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office to accept an in-kind gift from the University of San Francisco School of Law’s Racial Justice Clinic to hire two staff attorneys to help evaluate and, where appropriate, pursue resentencing or other remedies in cases involving claims of excessive sentence or wrongful conviction.
Tara Anderson, Director of Policy for the DA’s office, explained that legislative changes (including SB 1437 and AB 2942) allow for review or modification of certain sentences and that the reviews are time- and labor-intensive and require extensive records from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The clinic’s in-kind hiring would expand the DA’s capacity to process petitions and recommendations for reduced sentences. The committee approved the resolution and moved it to the full Board with a positive recommendation.
