Budget committee recommends acceptance of $1.65 million in opioid-related grants

The Budget and Finance Committee on April 22 unanimously recommended that the full Board approve two retroactive grant agreements to the Department of Public Health totaling $1,650,000.
The clerk described Item 4 as a $900,000 grant and Item 5 as a $750,000 grant from the California Department of Public Health for participation in overdose-data and opioid stewardship programs running from Jan. 1, 2020 through Aug. 31, 2022. Dr. Philip Coffin, speaking for the Health Department, said these projects continue and expand ongoing training and technical assistance: "These are projects that are effectively a continuation and expansion on work that we've been doing for several years at the health department," he said.
The committee held no public comment on the items and moved the two resolutions to the full Board with a positive recommendation; the roll-call vote recorded three ayes. Item 6, a separate Public Beach Safety grant, was continued because the presenter was not available.
The Health Department said the grants will support training of providers in opioid stewardship and expand technical assistance, including national-level work under one of the awards. The committee did not take final board action; the resolutions will return to the full Board for formal acceptance.
