Committee endorses DPH application for just over $7M in CDC HIV prevention funding for 2020

The Budget & Finance Committee on Oct. 16 recommended that the Board approve a Department of Public Health application for CDC HIV surveillance and prevention funds totaling just over $7,000,000 for calendar year 2020.
John Malecar, health program coordinator with the Community Health Equity and Promotion (CHEP) branch, explained the funding allocation: roughly $4.2 million for core HIV prevention services, about $800,000 to support epidemiology and surveillance efforts, and approximately $2.2 million for a special demonstration project providing low‑threshold services to people experiencing homelessness. Malecar said the branch administers allocation of HIV prevention funds for the city and was available to answer programmatic questions.
There was no BLA report and no public comment. Supervisor Mandelmann moved to forward the application to the full Board with a positive recommendation and the committee approved the motion without objection.
Next steps: DPH will submit the CDC application for calendar year 2020 as requested and the Board will consider the authorization on Oct. 22.
