The San Francisco Budget and Finance Committee voted June 19 to approve the release of $26,200,000 from its reserve to partially fund furniture, fixtures and equipment, information technology and moving costs for relocating city departments to 49 South Van Ness.
Dan Goncher of the Budget Legislative Analyst’s Office recommended the release after reviewing the administrator’s breakdown, saying, “We recommend approving the requested release of $26,200,000.” The BLA reported the full FF&E, IT and moving budget at about $39.1 million and outlined major line items: roughly $23.9 million for workstations and other furniture, $11.5 million for information technology and $3.7 million for moving costs.
City Administrator Naomi Kelly told the committee the office agreed with the BLA recommendations. Committee members asked detailed questions about the moving budget after Deputy City Administrator Ken Bukowski and Public Works staff explained the scope: about 1,800 employees will move from multiple locations, inventory will be barcoded and placed in a virtual warehouse for reuse where possible, and specialty equipment and IT disconnections will require weekend and night work. Public Works said those factors drive the roughly $3.7 million moving line.
Some members pushed for clarity on specific line items and the BLA noted a few technical adjustments between an original and a revised report; Goncher described those as clarifying changes rather than shifts in the bottom-line recommendation.
Chair Sandra Lee Feuer moved the committee’s positive recommendation; the motion was seconded and taken without objection. The committee also voted to file the item and asked the Controller to note that the committee intended to accept the BLA’s recommendations.
Next steps: the committee forwarded its recommendation to the full Board of Supervisors for final action. The committee asked departments to be ready to provide more implementation detail as departments prepare to occupy the building and deploy furniture and IT.
