Leong said the Marine Unit is the city's primary maritime law-enforcement unit, responsible for securing roughly 64 square miles of San Francisco waterways and port properties. He said the grant will extend the useful life of two larger vessels and improve search-and-rescue and evidence-recovery capability; specific counts of total marine vessels in the fleet were not provided in the meeting and Leong offered to follow up with numbers after the meeting.
No members of the public spoke on the item. The committee voted to send the grant authorization to the full Board with a positive recommendation.
The full Board will next consider formal acceptance of the grant and the related procurement for replacement watercraft.
