The Budget and Finance Committee discussed a proposed lease of space in an equipment room at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital to allow mobile network providers to install a distributed antenna system (DAS) that would improve in‑building cellular coverage for patients, visitors and staff.
Presenters explained the arrangement would waive the typical $5,000 monthly base rent while the provider participates in the in‑building DAS; the rent would be reinstated if the provider stopped offering the service or abandoned equipment. "It's waived under this aspect that they're providing the localized service within the building," a presenter said, adding the lease allows future equipment upgrades — including a move from current 4G LTE technology to 5G — which requires certainty for providers to invest.
Supervisors asked whether the system will be 4G or 5G; staff said the current implementation is expected to be 4G LTE but the lease contemplates upgrades. After an initial committee action to send the item to the full Board without a recommendation, Supervisor Malia Cohen moved near the end of the meeting to rescind the earlier vote and continue item 5 to the October 25 Budget and Finance meeting to receive clarifications about the technology and terms. The motion carried without objection.
