San Francisco International Airport staff briefed the Budget and Finance Committee on Feb. 1 on two lease modifications at the Superbay Hangar designed to free acreage for construction contractor staging and employee parking.
Kathy Weidner said the modifications would rearrange acreage between American and United, with American relinquishing 1.19 acres and United relinquishing 1.48 acres in exchange for 1.2 acres. She said the change will help the airport avoid off-site parking costs for contractors and is expected to produce construction‑related savings roughly estimated at $1 million per year over the next four years.
The Budget Analyst estimated the actual revenue loss from reduced leases would be about $386,000 over the remaining terms but concluded those losses would be offset by construction savings and recommended approval. Weidner said there was no plan to return the recaptured space to the original airlines after the four-year construction period; the airport intends to repurpose or re-lease the land.
The committee forwarded the modifications to the full board with a positive recommendation.
