Committee approves release of roughly $2.2M in reserves for Fine Arts Museums after guards’ schedule agreement

The Budget and Finance Committee advanced a request to release approximately $2,200,000 in reserved funds to the Fine Arts Museums for general facility maintenance and capital projects.
Ed Prohaska, chief financial officer for the Fine Arts Museums, told the committee that the funds were held pending resolution of a condition placed by the committee requiring that museum guards be moved to a 40-hour work week. Prohaska said a tentative agreement was reached quickly after the committee’s prior hold and a final agreement between the city and SEIU was reached on Sept. 21; the new schedules for the guards were set to be effective Saturday, Oct. 7.
Severn Campbell of the Budget and Legislative Analyst’s office confirmed the list of projects that would be funded by the $2.2 million and said the board had appropriated funds to cover the increased cost of moving guards to 40 hours in the current and next fiscal years. The analyst recommended release of the reserves.
Supervisor Aaron Peskin expressed appreciation for the museum’s cooperation and supported release of the reserves. Supervisor Jane Tang moved to file the hearing and release the reserves; the committee approved the motion 'without objection.'
