Committee forwards reenactments extending COVID-era protections for grocery, delivery and rehired workers
Summary
The committee voted to forward reenactments of emergency ordinances extending scheduling/health protections for grocery, drugstore, restaurant and on-demand delivery employees and a separate ordinance creating a right to re-employment for certain laid-off workers to the Board for consideration.
The Government Audit and Oversight Committee on Jan. 7 recommended that the Board consider reenactments of COVID-era emergency ordinances extending worker protections.
Supervisor Matt Haney moved to reenact the emergency ordinance (originally effective May 1 and reenacted several times) that temporarily requires grocery-store, drugstore, restaurant and on-demand delivery employees to receive health and scheduling protections during the public-health emergency; the reenactment extends the ordinance for an additional 60 days. The committee recorded no public callers and voted to forward the item as a committee report.
In a separate item, the committee also moved to reenact a "back-to-work" emergency ordinance that creates a right to re-employment for certain employees laid off because of COVID-19 when their employer seeks to fill the same or substantially similar position. Chair Marr noted the Board has voted on this policy multiple times; for Item 7 the clerk recorded two ayes and one absence (Vice Chair Peskin was absent for that item). Both reenactments were recommended to the Board for consideration on Jan. 12.
