The Budget & Finance Committee voted to forward to the full Board a resolution allowing the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission to accept and expend FEMA and California Governor's Office of Emergency Services grants totaling $377,115 for an alternate Rim Fire restoration project and related equipment purchases.
Dan Wade, water infrastructure capital projects director for the SFPUC, said some destroyed facilities from the 2013 Rim Fire—including the Miguel Meadows survey cabin and a deluge water tank—will not be rebuilt because they no longer serve public utility needs. Wade said the agency requested and received approval to spend money from other projects on an alternate project and needs the committee’s authorization to expend the funds. He said the city must contribute roughly $69,000 as its local share.
Wade detailed proposed purchases that include a wood chipper, heavy construction equipment and communications and records equipment such as a large plotter for scanning materials. Supervisor Tang asked why the grant period dated to 2016; Wade responded the FEMA and Cal OES approval, and the grant documentation process, took years following the 2013 disaster.
There was no public comment on the item. Supervisor Sheehy moved and the committee took the motion without objection to forward the resolution to the full Board with a positive recommendation. The finance analyst report was not available at the hearing.
