Committee endorses SFPUC grant actions to support Lower Cherry aqueduct rehab and early intake slope studies

Lower Cherry Aqueduct rehabilitation: Dan (SFPUC) described emergency rehabilitation work after damage related to the Rim Fire and prior emergency repair phases. He said the agency has incurred about $9.29 million to date and projects future costs of about $4.7 million, with a total program budget of roughly $14 million. The committee considered a resolution authorizing the SFPUC general manager to accept and expend up to $3,000,000 in grant funds (from the California Department of Water Resources) to help fund the project. The Budget & Legislative Analyst recommended an amendment to clarify that the resolution should authorize both acceptance and expenditure of the $3,000,000 and to acknowledge the approximately $11 million in matching costs; the committee adopted the amendments and moved the item to the full board with a positive recommendation.
Early Intake switchyard slope stabilization: Separately, SFPUC presented a FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program pre‑award/Phase 1 allocation of about $404,000 to fund engineering, environmental studies and scope definition for slope stabilization measures — including rock‑fall fences, vegetation and drainage — at the early intake switchyard that serves regional Hetch Hetchy facilities. The BLA noted that the $404,000 would replace previously allocated PUC funds and identified a $190,000 match; the committee recommended the item forward and it passed without objection.
Both items will appear on the Feb. 28 Board agenda for final action.
