Committee forwards DA’s retroactive $980,000 victim‑services grant to full Board

The Budget & Finance Committee on Feb. 21 advanced a resolution to the full Board of Supervisors that would retroactively authorize the District Attorney’s Office to accept about $980,000 in Victim‑Witness Assistance grant funding from the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services for the period July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017.
Delia Montiel of the District Attorney’s Office of Victim Services told the committee that the division used the funding to expand outreach and services, noting that “in the year 2016, our division served over 8,000 victims, a 40% increase from 5 years ago.” She described placing advocates in the community to provide immediate assistance for immigrant victims, LGBTQ victims, human trafficking and campus sexual assault victims, homeless victims and elderly clients. Montiel also said the office now has two courthouse dogs to support and comfort clients through court proceedings.
There was no public comment on the item. Supervisor Tang moved to forward the resolution to the full board with a positive recommendation; the motion passed without objection.
Next steps: the resolution will appear on the Board of Supervisors agenda on Feb. 28 for final action.
