Committee endorses 60-day reenactment of emergency leave ordinance for large employers

The Government Audit and Oversight Committee on Dec. 15 voted unanimously to recommend to the full Board of Supervisors the reenactment of emergency ordinance No. 59-20, which temporarily requires private employers with 500 or more employees to provide public health emergency leave during the COVID-19 emergency.
Supervisor Gordon Maher, chair of the committee, said the reenactment extends emergency leave by 60 days and “provides 2 extra weeks of fully paid leave for workers impacted by COVID-nineteen,” adding that the policy is particularly important amid a surge in transmissions.
The clerk, John Carroll, noted the item has been agendized for consideration by the full Board of Supervisors later the same day. The committee opened the item to public comment and reported there were no callers. On the motion offered by Chair Marr to recommend the ordinance as a committee report, Vice Chair Aaron Peskin, Member Matt Haney and Chair Marr each voted “aye.” The clerk announced three ayes and the item will move forward to the full Board for consideration.
No public testimony was recorded at the committee hearing. The committee’s recommendation forwards the existing emergency policy to the Board for potential continuation or modification under the Board’s regular meeting process.
