Supervisors advance $400,000 elder-abuse grant for DA’s victim services unit

The Budget & Finance Committee on Oct. 19 advanced a resolution authorizing the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office to accept and spend a $400,000 grant from the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services to strengthen services for elder, dependent and disabled victims.
Gina Castro Rodriguez, chief of victim services for the district attorney’s office, told the committee the unit serves nearly 7,000 victims a year and will use the funds for prevention, outreach and assistance aimed at pedestrian fatalities and financial scams that target older adults. “We’ll be able to do a lot of prevention work, a lot of engagement in the community,” Castro Rodriguez said.
Chair Katie Tang asked about a roughly $100,000 matching requirement. Castro Rodriguez said the office will meet the match with staff time and volunteer hours from the victim services division; volunteers undergo two weeks of training before assignment, she said. The presentation said the grant will also support work to help fraud victims repair credit and remove fraudulent listings tied to identity theft.
No public speakers addressed the item, and the committee moved the resolution forward to the full board with a positive recommendation without objection. Supervisor Mark Farrell was excused from the meeting.
The full board will consider the resolution on its Oct. 25 agenda unless otherwise stated.
