Committee backs $6.93 million CPUC/PG&E grant to continue city energy-efficiency programs

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors Budget and Finance Committee on Jan. 20 recommended that the full board authorize the city to accept and expend $6,930,000 from the California Public Utilities Commission through PG&E to continue energy-efficiency upgrade programs.
Jesse Denver, energy program manager at the Department of the Environment, told supervisors the San Francisco Energy Watch program has provided free audit services, direct-install services and other efficiency measures since 2003 and has leveraged more than $40 million in rebate incentives. He said the program helped commercial, small- and medium-sized business and multifamily sectors obtain more than $2 million in rebates in 2015 and exceeded its energy-reduction goals for that year.
No members of the public spoke on the item. Supervisor Katie Tang moved to forward the resolution with a positive recommendation; Supervisor Scott Wiener seconded the motion and the committee took the matter to the full board.
The committee record and the department presentation note the grant will support continuing direct-install and audit services citywide through Dec. 31, 2016; the resolution before the Board will authorize acceptance and expenditure of the funds. The committee did not amend the proposed request. The item will appear on the Board of Supervisors agenda for Jan. 26.
Next steps: the Board of Supervisors will consider final approval and any implementing terms required by the Department of the Environment.
