Supervisor Aaron Peskin opened a hearing on the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner—s annual report and detailed longstanding concerns including chronic staffing shortages, staff turnover, lost accreditation, delays in issuing death certificates and autopsy reports, and instances of annual reports not being posted or being changed after publication. Peskin said he called the hearing to explore the issues and invited collaboration with the city administrator to fix problems.
Peskin moved, with a second from Supervisor Valley Brown, to continue the hearing to the committee—s Oct. 3 meeting to allow his office and staff to meet with medical examiner personnel in advance of a full hearing. The motion passed without objection. No public commenters testified on the item during the Sept. 5 session.
Peskin framed the continuation as an opportunity for staff-level dialogue and system fixes before a public hearing and said his motion was intended to be constructive rather than purely critical.
