Panel advances $188,000 grant for Buchanan Street Mall activation with Exploratorium and Trust for Public Land

The Budget & Finance Committee on Sept. 9 advanced a resolution allowing the Recreation and Park Department to accept and expend a grant of about $188,000 from the Trust for Public Land for a Buchanan Street Mall activation project.
Rec & Park staff said the project will install a series of arches, entry markers, planters and an "audio story dome" across five contiguous blocks of the Western Addition to unify the mall and share neighborhood stories. The concept design was developed through a community design task force and a prototype was shown at a health fair. Project partners named in the presentation included the Trust for Public Land, Citizen Films, Green Streets and the Exploratorium, which is working on the design.
Steve Jenrich, speaking for the Exploratorium, and Trudy Garber of the Trust for Public Land offered public comments in support and thanked the committee for its backing. The committee moved the item forward without objection; staff said construction and fabrication would proceed in the next month with an expected opening in October.
