City Administrator seeks private funds, LED upgrades for City Hall centennial

City Administrator staff asked the Budget and Finance Committee on Feb. 4 to accept a $150,000 donation from PG&E to the San Francisco City Hall Preservation Fund to support the City Hall Centennial celebration and related infrastructure improvements.
John Gavin (presenting for the City Administrator) showed a centennial documentary teaser and said funds would support fundraising and celebration activities. Naomi Kelly, city administrator, told supervisors the LED lighting project is estimated at about $1,000,000, the secure permanent installation is estimated at about $2,000,000 and a 30‑minute documentary is estimated at about $250,000. She said roughly $1.8–2.0 million would come from the capital budget and the remainder from philanthropic contributions.
Kelly said the centennial fund will be dedicated to centennial activities only, and that contributions over $100,000 require a separate accept and expend resolution under the Board’s fund rules. She described a June 19 civic celebration and coordination with the U.S. Conference of Mayors visiting the city.
Supervisors complimented the presentation and moved to forward the accept and expend resolution with a positive recommendation to the full Board. Several supervisors emphasized that the project pairs celebration with infrastructure upgrades, including LED lighting that staff said will reduce labor and energy costs for future lighting changes.
Next steps: the committee forwarded the item to the full Board with a positive recommendation; the City Administrator’s Office will continue fundraising and finalize installation and production budgets.
