Tax Collector: 544 parcels remain on revised auction list; committee accepts amendment
Summary
The committee accepted an amended list and authorized the Tax Collector to proceed with a public auction of tax-defaulted parcels; the Tax Collector reported 544 parcels remain (down from 611), roughly 90% of which are timeshares or vacant lots, and explained redemption processes and collecting challenges for timeshares.

The Tax Collector presented a resolution authorizing sale at public auction of certain tax-defaulted parcels and asked the committee to accept a revised list. Of the 544 parcels currently on the list, she said roughly 90% are timeshares or vacant lots and that, historically, most inhabited-parcel owners redeem prior to auction.
She explained timeshares are difficult to collect from because owners may be scattered and often find it financially preferable to forgo payment; for parcels with occupants the office sends multiple notices and uses sheriff’s in-person notice as needed.
Supervisors asked why the 2014 auction was not held; the Tax Collector said parcels had not reached the statutory threshold requiring auction under state code and that the decision to delay was a policy call in the treasurer's office. The committee adopted the staff-recommended amendment to accept the revised list into the file and amended the resolution count from 611 to 544; the motion carried without objection.
