Committee approves commemorative 'Joe Rosenthal Way' for 600 block of Sutter

President (board member introduced in the hearing as) Paskin and supporters recounted Rosenthal’s career as a photojournalist, his Pulitzer-Prize-winning image of U.S. Marines raising the flag on Iwo Jima and his long tenure at the San Francisco Chronicle. Supporters including photographer Tom Graves, Marines Memorial representatives and several retired Marines described the photograph’s historical resonance and urged the committee to approve the commemorative designation.
During committee discussion Member Peskin moved to amend a numerical typo in the draft so that the cited war-bonds fundraising total reads $26,000,000,000 (inserting a missing '6'), then moved the resolution as amended to the full Board; the committee recorded three ayes and the motion passed.
Next steps: the resolution as amended will go to the Board of Supervisors for final action and the committee anticipates a commemorative sign and unveiling in coordination with the Marines Memorial Club.
