Committee recommends extending accessible-entry compliance deadlines through year-end

The Land Use and Transportation Committee of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors on July 22 voted to forward an ordinance to the full Board that would extend deadlines for existing buildings with places of public accommodation to bring primary entries and paths of travel into compliance with accessibility requirements.
Supervisor Rafael Mandelmann (District 8), sponsor of the measure, told the committee the item duplicates a prior file and would further extend Accessible Business Entrance (ABE) program deadlines through the end of the year. Mandelmann said the extension will give the Department of Building Inspections, the Mayor's Office on Disability, the Office of Small Business, Public Works, and disability and small-business advocates more time to work out longer-term fixes that balance program goals with practical realities for small businesses.
"I do believe we are getting there on a sensible longer term fix but we do need the additional time," Mandelmann said.
Public comment on the item was brief: an unidentified commenter made an off-the-cuff remark about disability policy before public comment closed. Chair Mirna Melgaard moved that the ordinance be recommended as a committee report to the full Board; the clerk recorded three ayes and announced the motion passed. The committee noted the item may be considered by the Board at the meeting on July 30, 2024.
