Committee approves CDC REACH grant acceptance to address cardiovascular disparities

The Budget & Finance Committee approved a resolution authorizing the Department of Public Health to accept and expend approximately $800,000 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) SF program for the period Sept. 30, 2014 through Sept. 29, 2015.
Jacqueline Scribe, deputy director of community health equity and promotion at DPH, told the committee the grant aims to address cardiovascular health disparities among African American and Latino residents in San Francisco and will link patients with community-based agencies to improve heart health. "The goal of this grant is to address the cardiovascular heart health disparities among African Americans and Latinos in San Francisco," Scribe said. She noted the department is expanding a pilot that links patients from Southeast Health Center to the Bayview Hunters Point YMCA and said the effort will emphasize non-pharmaceutical prescriptions to improve heart health.
With no public comment, the committee approved the resolution and forwarded the item to the full Board by motion without objection. The committee did not take a roll-call vote in the transcript; the clerk noted items acted on today will appear on the Nov. 18 Board agenda unless otherwise stated.
