The Board of Supervisors Budget and Finance Committee on Oct. 29 approved a resolution authorizing the Recreation and Parks Department to accept and expand a $200,000 grant from the California Department of Parks and Recreation's Habitat Conservation Fund to support the Youth Stewardship Program (YSP).
Dahlia Curry of the Recreation and Parks Department told the committee that the Habitat Conservation Fund allocates roughly $2,000,000 per year for nature interpretation and similar programs that bring youth into parks and wildlife areas. She described YSP as engaging kindergarten through 12th-grade students in environmental education and service-learning projects across San Francisco parks and open spaces and said, "The program is free and available to any school or youth group in San Francisco." Curry said a prior five-year HCF grant of $165,000 awarded in 2010 was set to expire in February 2015 and that the new grant will continue funding until February 2019.
There were no questions and no public comment on the item. A motion to approve the resolution was made and taken without objection.
