Committee recommends landmark designation for Greg Angelo Museum after broad public support

The Land Use and Transportation Committee voted May 20 to recommend that the Board of Supervisors designate the Greg Angelo Museum, located at 225 San Leandro Way, as a city landmark under Article 10 of the Planning Code.
Planning Department staff presented the property’s nomination and told the committee the Historic Preservation Commission reviewed the proposal and unanimously recommended designation after receiving 55 public comments — 48 in support and 7 in opposition. "At their public hearing at the HPC, we heard 55 public comments about the designation with 48 in support and 7 in opposition and voted unanimously to approve the resolution recommending landmark designation of the Greg Angelo Museum," planning staff Heather Samuels said.
Numerous public speakers described the museum as a creative hub and community resource. Owner Greg Angelo said, "It's a joy to be here," and other speakers described the site as a "sanity hub" for artists, an accessible place for international creators, and an important cultural asset that helps retain and support local creative communities.
Chair Melgar moved to send the ordinance to the full Board with a positive recommendation; several supervisors asked to be added as co‑sponsors and the committee voted to forward the item by a 3–0 vote. The designation recommendation will go to the Board for final action.
