Supervisors move to rename block of Oakdale Avenue for community organizer James Richards

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors Land Use Committee on July 1 voted to recommend that the full Board rename one block of Oakdale Avenue east of Third Street to "James Richards Way." The unanimous committee action sends the item to the July 9 board meeting as a committee report.
Supervisor Shamann Walton, sponsor of the resolution, said James Richards has led decades of community organizing and workforce training in District 10, co-founding the group known as ABU and helping create entry pathways into trades. Walton noted the renaming also commemorates a site of a past fatal shooting near the Bayview Opera House and honors Richards’ 80th birthday and long community service. "James Richards always gets his way," Walton said, framing the renaming as recognition of a sustained local legacy.
The resolution directs the Department of Public Works to initiate the city street-renaming procedures, coordinate required notices with the Clerk of the Board, and report back to the Board of Supervisors so the Board may take final action. No members of the public spoke on the item during the committee hearing.
Chair Mirna Melgar moved to send the resolution with a positive recommendation to the full Board; the clerk recorded three ayes (Melgar, Preston, Peskin) and the motion passed. The item is scheduled to appear before the Board on July 9 for final consideration.
