Public Works presented a resolution June 16 to retroactively accept and expend a $200,000 grant from the Bay Area Rapid Transit District to staff two pit‑stop public toilets near BART stations as part of the city's pit stop program.
Rachel Alonso, transportation finance analyst with Public Works, told the committee the grant will fund staffing for locations at 16th Street & Mission and the Civic Center/UN Plaza, will be matched by Public Works operating funds, and supports a program that now operates 13 locations citywide. "This resolution retroactively authorizes Public Works to accept and expend a $200,000 grant from BART for staffing public toilets through our pit stop program," Alonso said.
Supervisor London Breed and others praised the program's dignity and benefits to public cleanliness and workforce development. The committee forwarded the grant acceptance and matching plan to the full Board with a positive recommendation.
