Committee backs Parkside Branch Library landmark designation and sends it to full board

The committee advanced an ordinance to designate the Parkside Branch Library (1200 Teroval Street, in Square Park) as a historic landmark under article 10 of the planning code. Jonathan Goldberg, speaking for the sponsor, said the designation recognizes the library’s cultural importance on the West Side. Pilar LaValley of the Planning Department outlined the building’s mid-20th-century design, noting the Historic Preservation Commission unanimously recommended designation.
Planning staff said the branch, designed by Appleton and Wolford with landscape architect Lawrence Halperin and constructed in 1951, embodies mid-century public-library design principles such as simplicity of form and functional layout. One remote speaker, David Pilpel, expressed support during public comment.
President Peskin moved to send the item to the full Board of Supervisors with a committee recommendation; the committee recorded unanimous ayes and advanced the designation.
Next steps: The ordinance will be considered by the full Board of Supervisors.
