Board committee forwards Public Defender grant to expand juvenile reentry attorney

The Budget and Finance Committee on Feb. 12 forwarded an ordinance authorizing the San Francisco Public Defender—s Office to accept and expand a grant of approximately $94,000 from the Board of State and Community Corrections to fund a trial-attorney position focused on juvenile accountability and reentry.
Patricia from the Public Defender—s Office described the grant-funded role as a reentry and placement attorney who helps expedite placements for youth committed to out-of-home care, monitors young people while they are placed, and develops reentry plans in collaboration with Probation. Patricia said the attorney—s caseload is about 121 youth and that the position has shortened placement delays "from historically anywhere 2 to 6 months now to 2 to 2 weeks to a month at the most." She characterized the post as "invaluable."
There were no public comments on the item. Committee members moved the ordinance forward with a recommendation and the motion was taken without objection. The ordinance is scheduled to appear on the full Board agenda on Feb. 25.
