Committee backs DPH requests to accept DOJ youth-treatment and Safe Haven visitation grants

The Budget & Finance Committee recommended that the Board accept two Department of Public Health grant awards: a Department of Justice grant to expand juvenile substance-use assessment and treatment capacity and a Safe Haven Supervised Visitation and Safe Exchange Grant for supervised family visitation.
DPH juvenile behavioral health staff described the DOJ grant (item 4) as funding to increase integrated substance-use assessment and treatment services for juveniles in San Francisco, including an intensive first-year planning period and subsequent years of implementation. Rita Perez, director of AIM Higher (assessment and discharge planning), joined DPH staff in outlining program aims to expand services at the Juvenile Justice Center.
On item 5, DPH—s Jim Stillwell described the continuation of the Safe Haven program (approximately $133,000 annually), which provides supervised visitation, case management and family counseling services to families where child safety is a concern, particularly in domestic-violence situations.
Both items were moved forward to the full Board with recommendation and were taken without opposition in committee.
