Committee recommends acceptance of $1.01 million UASI cybersecurity grant

The Government Audit and Oversight Committee voted to forward to the Board of Supervisors a resolution authorizing the city to accept approximately $1,012,873 in supplemental Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) grant funds awarded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Ami Alden of the Department of Emergency Management explained the award and said San Francisco is both the regional UASI chair and the fiscal agent for Bay Area grant distributions. Alden said about $967,000 will go to the Northern California Regional Intelligence Center for cybersecurity equipment and software maintenance; an additional $45,000 will be allocated to the California Office of Emergency Services to coordinate statewide cybersecurity activities. The department said accepting the funds creates no new city positions and requires no local matching funds.
Committee members asked clarifying questions; public comment included questions about the scope of "cybersecurity" initiatives, which the presenter invited requesters to follow up on with staff. The committee moved the item forward with a positive recommendation to the full Board.
Next steps: the item will appear on the Board of Supervisors agenda as a committee report for acceptance of the grant and any required budgetary housekeeping.
