Committee approves retroactive acceptance of FEMA port-security funds for fire department

The Government Audit and Oversight Committee unanimously recommended that the Board of Supervisors approve a retroactive resolution allowing the Fire Department to accept approximately $376,000 in additional FEMA port-security grant funds to bolster its water-based response capabilities.
Mark Corso of the Fire Department explained that the department had previously received $230,000 and was later offered an extra allocation of roughly $376,000 to be spent before the program deadline. "I apologize for the retroactive nature of the resolution," Corso said, adding that the short, roughly one-month turnaround and the lack of any local match or other commitments led the department to accept the funds immediately and process a formal retroactive accept-and-expend.
Committee members treated the request as straightforward. Supervisor David Campos moved a positive recommendation; Supervisor Katie Tang seconded the motion, and Chair Supervisor Malia Cohen noted the vote was unanimous. The clerk indicated the item will appear on the Board agenda on 09/03/2013 unless otherwise stated.
No public speakers addressed this item during the hearing.
The recommendation now moves to the full Board of Supervisors for final action.
