The San Francisco Board of Supervisors Rules Committee on Tuesday voted to send to the full Board a resolution approving the official naming of two street segments in the Hunters View HOPE SF Phase 3 project, including a new street to be called Memory Lane and the extension of Fairfax Avenue through the new phase.
Supervisor Shamann Walton, chair of the committee, said the name was selected through a resident-driven process. "We wanted to do something to make sure that we honor the memory of folks in community," Walton said, noting residents worked with the Mayor’s Office of Community Development and John Stewart Company on the selection.
Cindy Heavens, senior project manager with MOCD, told the committee the Hunters View revitalization replaces existing public housing and reconnects the site to city infrastructure. "Hunters View project is, existing public housing project that contained 2,267 public housing units scattered across 51 buildings on approximately 16 acres," Heavens said. She described Phase 3 as the vertical component with 118 units across two buildings, including 53 public-housing replacement units and 64 units without an operating subsidy, plus property-management offices, a learning center, a resident-services office run by the Bayview YMCA, a cafe and a new one-acre park.
Heavens said the naming process began with a list created when the project's initial map was recorded and was narrowed through an online survey, door-to-door outreach and in-person interviews during fall 2023 and through 2025. "The residents came up with Memory Lane," she said, adding the name is intended to honor residents who supported HOPE SF and those who once lived at Hunters View.
With presenters stressing the need for street names before move-ins and mail delivery, Supervisor Ronan moved to forward the resolution to the full Board with a positive recommendation. The clerk recorded aye votes from Vice Chair Safae, Supervisor Ronan and Chair Walton; the motion passed without objection.
The committee had no public speakers on the item. The presenters noted the temporary certificate of occupancy for the Phase 3 affordable housing is anticipated in February–March 2025, and they requested approval to ensure residents can receive mail and move in on schedule.
Next steps: the resolution will appear on the full Board agenda for consideration on Nov. 19, 2024, unless otherwise stated on the record of committee actions.
