Summary
The Rules Committee approved reappointments to the Sunshine Ordinance Task Force, reappointing journalists, transparency advocates and long-serving members and sending those names to the full Board for confirmation.
The Rules Committee on Oct. 7 moved to recommend reappointment of nine members to the Sunshine Ordinance Task Force and forwarded the list to the full Board. The committee heard one-minute remarks from each nominee, who emphasized commitments to open government, complaint processing efficiency and public access to records.
Dean Schmidt, a Society of Professional Journalists appointee, and Leila Lahood (journalist representative) both urged retention of the current task force. Saul Sugarman, Maxine Anderson (League of Women Voters), Laura Stein and other nominees described plans to reduce backlog, improve turnaround time and expand outreach. Matt Yanke, who said he has chaired the task force since 2022, noted work to reduce the backlog to 32 cases. Chris Hyland and David Pilpel also asked for the committee’s support. Bruce Wolf was absent and submitted a letter.
Chair Walton moved to appoint the slate; Vice Chair Safae, Member Peskin and Chair Walton voted to confirm the reappointments and the motion passed without objection.
