Committee forwards SFPD non-city surveillance camera policy to full board

SAN FRANCISCO — On Sept. 9 the Rules Committee advanced an ordinance to the full Board of Supervisors that would rescind the sunset clause in the ordinance approving SFPD's use of non-city entity surveillance cameras.
Aja Steeves, policy development division manager for SFPD, told the committee the policy had been reviewed through the Administrative Code Section 19B process, including the Privacy Surveillance Advisory Board and the Committee on Information Technology, and that the board originally approved the policy in September 2022. "We are not introducing any changes other than requesting the rescinding of the sunset provision," Steeves said.
There were no public speakers on the item. Vice Chair Safaie moved to forward the ordinance to the full board with a recommendation; the motion passed without objection.
The forwarded ordinance would allow SFPD to continue using non-city surveillance camera feeds under the existing surveillance-technology policy, subject to the oversight and review mechanisms described during the 19B process.
