Committee advances amendment to tighten enforcement of illegal street vending

Supervisor Asha Safai presented an amendment on June 10 to the Public Works Code intended to close a perceived loophole in enforcement of illegal street vending. Under the proposed change, once Public Works documents that notice was given to a person vending without a permit, that notice would remain effective for 120 days instead of requiring repeated written notice each time enforcement occurs.
Safai said the change was based on street-inspector experience and would target illegal fencing of stolen goods while still respecting due process for legal vendors. No public commenters appeared on the item during the committee hearing. The committee voted to forward the amendment to the full Board with a positive recommendation, passing unanimously.
The item will be considered by the full Board under the usual schedule.
