Committee accepts extra $82,000 in federal Buffer Zone Protection funds

The Budget & Finance Committee approved a resolution to record an increased award for the Buffer Zone Protection Program from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, raising the grant amount from about $199,820 to $282,506.
Amy Alden of the Department of Emergency Management told the committee the grant supports law-enforcement planning, equipment and training to protect critical facilities such as power plants, financial institutions and utilities. Alden said the Board had previously approved roughly $200,000 for the grant in December 2011 and that Homeland Security offered an additional $82,000, which the city can accept without local matching funds or creating new positions.
The committee moved, seconded and approved the increase without opposition.
