Committee advances ordinance to extend fire-alarm upgrade deadline to July 1, 2023

The Land Use and Transportation Committee voted May 3 to advance an ordinance that would extend the deadline for owners of existing buildings to upgrade fire alarm systems from July 1, 2021 to July 1, 2023.
Committee clerk Erica Major summarized the ordinance as an amendment to the Fire Code and existing Building Code to move the compliance date. The committee had no formal presentation scheduled; Andy Mullen was available for questions.
Supervisor Aaron Peskin offered a technical amendment to correct a cross-reference on page 4, line 21 (changing the citation identifier from "4 d" to "5 e"). After the clerk called the roll, Supervisors Peskin, Preston and Melgar recorded "aye" votes and the technical amendment passed.
Supervisor Peskin then moved the item forward with a positive recommendation as amended. The clerk recorded three ayes and the committee voted to forward the ordinance to the full Board of Supervisors for final action.
The committee’s vote transmits the ordinance and the committee report to the full Board; any final change in law will occur only if the Board adopts the ordinance at a subsequent meeting.
